So what do we when it rains?

It’s the age old question. We all love a British holiday break, but what do we do when the sun doesn’t shine?

A staycation is a great opportunity to enjoy Devon’s stunning coastlines and countryside of outstanding natural beauty. But with it comes the chance of a day or two of less than wonderful weather and it can seem daunting finding fun on a rainy afternoon - especially when we need to keep younger family members entertained!

But East Devon (and a little bit of Dorset!) has some fantastic things to see and do, providing entertainment for all ages on those gloomier days. Here’s our magnificent top six attractions.

  1. Lyme Regis Museum (www.lymeregismuseum.co.uk): No visit to the Jurassic Coast would be complete without a trip to this informative museum, which has a section devoted to Mary Anning, one of the UK’s most famous fossil hunters. Find out all about the history and discoveries of the Victorian palaeontologist, who was world renowned for unearthing skeletons of Ichthyosaur and Plesiosaurus along the shores of Lyme Regis.

  2. The Donkey Sanctuary, Sidmouth (www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk): Open all year, with free entry, this delightful escape includes scenic walks, award-winning gardens and hundreds of lovely donkeys to meet! The sanctuary was set up more than 50 years ago and is now one of the world’s largest equine welfare charities. There’s also an indoor donkey sanctuary history exhibition and large cafe. This winter sees the launch of a new toys and treats trail for children. A great day out!

  3. Thelma Hubert Gallery, Honiton (www.thelmahulbert.com): For those with an artistic mindset, this fantastic gallery includes a permanent display of works by the famous member of the influential Euston Road School of painters, as well as exhibitions by local artists and workshops for the public. There’s also the chance to buy some art and craft gifts. Delightful!

  4. Beer Quarry Caves (www.beerquarrycaves.co.uk): Proper indoor activity this one, offering the chance to explore 2,000-year-old man-made caves quarried from Beer stone. There’s guided tours of this vast complex, and a chance to see bats too! The venue also hosts a range of events across the summer, including music, plays and light shows.

  5. Pecorama, Beer (www.pecorama.co.uk): Staying in Beer for the summer season? Then why not visit this fascinating model railway attraction and ride trains pulled by a fleet of steam locomotives on an amazing 7.5 inch gauge steam railway. If that isn’t enough, there’s also award-winning gardens to tour.

  6. Seaton Tramway, Colyton (www.tram.co.uk): Ok, so it closes for the winter, but it’s known to rain in summer too! If so, this a wonderful way to step back in time and enjoy a traditional tram ride from Colyton to Seaton through wetlands with the chance to spot local wildlife en route. Buy a yellow wristband and you can jump on and off the different trams all day long. A fun way to reach the Seaton coastline from The Old Bakehouse.
