Sun, sea and café culture

A seaside holiday with a dizzying choice of cafes is the ideal blend for holidaymakers to the East Devon coast. When you visit The Old Bakehouse, you don’t have to travel far to find the very best cafes. Here’s our top five in Colyton and Seaton for that all important caffeine fix, snacks and cakes!

1. The Bear Bread Bakery, Dolphin Street, Colyton, EX246NA

Starting in Colyton and Just over the road from The Old Bakehouse, we love this charming little bakery cafe, which has proved a popular meeting point for local townsfolk. Hosts Colin and Sharon serve a range of hot drinks, pastries and hearty breakfasts. Sourdough loaves and Danishes are baked on the premises.

2. Green Leaf Coffee Lounge, Marine Place, Seaton, EX12 2QJ

A brand new addition to Seaton’s burgeoning scene, this provides the usual drinks and snacks menu but offers a capacious, yet relaxing setting, with great window seats for watching the world go by. Staff are friendly and the atmosphere convivial, plus it’s just a coffee bean’s throw from the beach!

3. Finn Coffee, Station Road, Colyton, EX246NB

One of the newest coffee shops to Colyton, this is delightfully perched on the banks of the River Coly and part of the Finn Riverside Gallery and Studio. The venue plays host to pop-up exhibitions and photography showcases. The cafe sells a range of lovely coffees, teas and hot chocolate, which you can enjoy at an outdoor table. This cafe sources its roasted beans from Coffee Factory, just two miles away and next door to Lyme Bay Winery. Well worth a visit too!

4. Passiflora Coffee and Plants, 3 Cross Street, Seaton, EX122LH

Back to Seaton now and we love this gorgeous little coffee shop, which sells a fabulous selection of plants as well as delicious coffee, cakes and vegan snacks. You can choose to sit in a lovely courtyard garden or take your snacks to the beach, which is just minutes away. Great seaside vibes!

5. Merchant’s Tea Rooms, Market Square, Colyton, EX246JR

Finally - and back to Colyton again - enjoy a scrumptious Devon cream tea at this pretty little English tea room housed in a Grade II Listed building. If that’s not enough, the place doubles up as an evening bistro and provides Sunday lunches. If you want more, you can pop to the historic Heritage Centre next door and learn all about the amazing history of our historic town (opens Spring time). Phew!
