We’re spinning again..
For many music fans nothing beats the sound of a needle dropping into the groove of a vinyl record. The instant crackle and pop of static heightening the anticipation before the first notes of a favourite artist suddenly burst through the speakers.
For some it’s a transportive moment, the music a catalyst for nostalgic reflection. For younger listeners, it’s an exciting alternative to the often sterile experience of music streaming and the chance to own an actual copy of an album, forging a physical connection with an artist they love.
Vinyl is suddenly fashionable again, with more than five million records sold last year in the UK alone. It’s all a far cry from the mid-1990s when the popularity of vinyl was at an all time low. So we’re really pleased to offer guests staying at The Old Bakehouse the chance to enjoy listening to music in this most romantic of formats.
Our lounge includes a record player and a range of fantastic records to cater for most – if not all - musical tastes, whether it’s RnB star Jorja Smith, rock chameleon David Bowie or jazz legend Miles Davis.
If you’re looking to start up or add to your own record collection, we’re also selling records by a diverse collection of artists, including Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and Donna Summer to name a few. For even more choice, why not check out some great record shops and fairs further afield. Here’s a few of our favourites:
Clocktower Records (Unit 10a, St Michael’s Estate, St Michael’s Lane, Bridport, DT6 3RR): About a 30-minute drive from The Old Bakehouse, this is a great independent record store, with a fantastic selection of mostly second-hand records covering all the musical genres. The owner is really helpful when advising on the best sounds, allowing you to listen to your selection before you commit to spend!
Vinyl Saturday (Rear of Bridport United Church, East Street, Bridport, DT6 3LJ): This quarterly record fair is a chance to explore a huge collection of records brought together by vinyl dealers across the South West. You can chat to the sellers or just while away the hours browsing. It’s a great way to lose yourself in music.
Rooster Records (98 Fore Street, Exeter, EX4 3HY): Slightly further afield, a crate diggers paradise, with a mixture of old and new releases. The website boasts more than 75,000 items in stock, including CDs and DVDs, and it can feel a little daunting for the uninitiated. But staff are always helpful if you can’t find what you’re looking for.
