Carnival time in Colyton

A night of dragons, dancers, ghostly trains and pink horses were among the colourful highlights at this year’s amazing Colyton Carnival.

Soundtracked by thumping tunes, the carnival snaked its way around the town twice, providing an indelible memory to the thousands who lined the route to cheer, dance and give money to charity.

This year’s event, held on a balmy early September evening, featured many local residents, including children from nearby schools and youth groups.

Part of the West Country Carnival season, the Colyton Carnival is a firm fixture on the East Devon Circuit, with many participants also parading in similar events in nearby Seaton, Axminster and Sidmouth throughout the autumn. It’s a big fundraiser for local charities and includes lots of activities for the townsfolk in the week leading up.

This year’s fun and games included a best decorated shop window competition, a car treasure hunt and a carnival quiz night at Colyton Football Club. Saturday also saw the regular carnival market, which attracts hundreds of bargain hunters!

The evening procession included brilliantly decorated floats - with prizes awarded to the best - as well as a traditional carnival princess, and majorettes entertaining the mass of revellers lining the route. The event was spectacular fun and continues to provide a hugely important date in the Colyton social calendar.

Last year’s carnival - the first to resume following the Covid pandemic - raised more than £6,000 for local charities, including scouts, brownies, the town football club and theatre group. Organisers are hoping to repeat that success this year.
