Bed, breakfast and art at The Old Bakehouse

To celebrate the many artists who live and work in Colyton, we’re launching a new gallery showcase for guests to enjoy during their stay with us.

We’re kicking things off with a series of paintings by Trevor Hunt, who lives in the town and has been an artist for more than 50 years. Trevor specialises in large-scale, vivid renderings of landscapes around the UK, blending the impressionistic and abstract to startling effect.

He works mostly in oils and acrylics, using other media such as cold wax and oil bars to enhance his paintings. Brushes are seldom used, as he instead prefers to create with palette knives and scrapers.

Trevor says: “Using palette knives allows me to be expressive in a way brushes can’t. Spreading paint onto a canvas creates some wonderful textures and markings. I love pushing those boundaries and exploring ways to express myself.”

Trevor works part-time as an art and music activities coordinator at a care home in Sidmouth. He inspires residents to express their own creative talents and says age is no barrier to discovering your own artistic ability.

Trevor, 65, admits to producing his most satisfying work over the last ten years. Having always had a passion for the sea and the surrounding countryside, Trevor draws inspiration from its beauty in all its different forms as well as from the music he listens to while painting.

He says: “I find electronic music and some progressive rock, particularly Pink Floyd, helps surface emotion which I can convey through my work.”

A selection of Trevor’s paintings now hang in the breakfast room at The Old Bakehouse. We’ve included a few of them here.
