Celebrating Summer with new Art at the Old Bakehouse

We’re excited to unveil some fabulous new art this summer from our friends at the Seaton & District Art Society.

The latest selection of paintings are currently hanging in the lounge, dining room and hallway of our B&B, available for guests to buy as a souvenir of their stay with us.

The art society, which has a membership of more than 100 local artists who live and work in Devon, are preparing for their 54th annual Art Exhibition, which is being held at the United Reformed Church Hall, in Seaton, from August 8-16.

Artists who have contributed to our collection, are often inspired by the countryside and seascapes of east Devon and the Jurassic Coast. This season’s alumni include:

Alison Miller, who specialises in experimental embroidery, embracing tradition embroidery stitches with the added dimensions of dying fabrics, painting, manipulation of materials, paper and threads, machine stitching and collage. Alison says: “Any type of material can be used, one’s imagination can be the only hinderance. The colours, shapes and patterns of nature have always charmed me.”

Penny Wood, who only took up art eight years ago, enjoys drawing and experimenting with a wide variety of mediums such as oil, acrylic, pastels and charcoal and enjoys going to classes where she is able to learn new techniques and talk to fellow artists.

Mary Noon lives and paints in West Dorset. Primarily an acrylic painter, Mary uses a wide range of mediums including cyanotype and collagraphs. She loves texture and this is always at the forefront of her work, aiming to draw the viewer from afar closer into her work.

Irene Hirons is inspired by colour, nature and her surroundings. She works in a variety of media, but mainly watercolour and acrylic and says: “I like to add a touch of sparkle if the piece will take it. I like my work to have a touch of the surreal about it, but the subject is always recognisable.”

The Seaton and District Art Society holds regular workshops and competitions, and welcomes new members, be they beginners, hobbyists or seasoned professionals! Find out how to join by visiting their website: Seatonartsociety.co.uk
